Your baby continues to put on weight at about ½ pound each week. This layer of fat will help your baby regulate his body temperature after leaving your climate-controlled womb. In fact, your baby will be 15 percent fat at birth (and you … well that’s another story). Even in the womb, your baby can listen, feel, touch and see. The only thing separating him from living in the outside world is a little thing called the birth canal. Other highlights this week:

His gums are firm with ridges that look somewhat like teeth, though his actual pearly whites won’t start breaking through until he’s between three months and a year old.

Your baby has definite patterns of sleep and wakefulness—opening his eyes while awake and closing them while sleeping. Your baby will become alert and turn his head toward light and sound just as a newborn would—except when you put on that Celine Dion CD. Then the baby puts his hands up, turns away and gurgles, “Oh no you didn’t!”

Your baby is now around 18½ inches long and nearly 6 pounds—just about as big as a breadbox!

It was a blessing in disguise… We had hosted out Move-A-Palooza party the day before and had obviously done a little tooo much. My contractions started that night, waking me up half the night and then eased out unitl morning when I was contracting so close together that I barely had time to tell Mk what was happening. We headed out to the hospital just to be sure with Mamasan and G-Daddy tagging along (they were in town for the weekend). The doctor I saw works with the birth center I just transfered to and he was great. He made me aware of not just one but two very important things that the first bith center had missed to bring to my attention when he was going through my charts and has now made the baby even safer then before. I am so thankful I didn’t just sit on my butt all day the day before or else we would have never found it out.

I am doing really good now, I just have pain in the front but I’m dealing just dandy. I have gained a total of 12lbs as of last Thursday and the baby weighs a whopping 5lbs (they measured by ultrasound at the hospital). Our new home is coming together nicely and you can almost see Remmy’s floor again.

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers that were sent our way.

Sunday night I woke up with bad back pain and what I thought were braxton hick contractions. It’s safe to say I didn’t get much sleep that night. The next day I woke up with the same pain but not as bad until we were on our way out of town heading towards Tampa for some Skyline (yum!) when everything got much worse and I called the midwife. She immediately sent me to Florida Regional Hospital to get it checked out. They hooked me up to the machines and before we knew it the nurse said that Remmy was perfectly healthy but I was contracting 2-3 minutes apart. We were very surprised but were very thankful when she checked me and said there was no dilation (that’s a good thing). I’m only measuring between 32-33 weeks and the baby would not be perfectly developed if he arrived now. They gave me a shot of terbutaline (a preterm labor drug to stop contractions) every 20 minutes until I stopped contracting. By the way it’s a shot in your arm and OUCH that stuff stings. Anyways, by the second dose my contractions were under control and they said whatever it was they wiped it out of my system and it most likely wouldn’t return. Since they didn’t know what caused me to start contracting they ordered me to bed rest and that was that.

Well, I wish that was the end of the story. Not more than 3 hours later after taking a very restful nap that night I woke up and I started contracting again.  I called the midwife and ordered me the pill form of the shot they gave me at the hospital to take every six hours until they figure out what is causing the contractions or until I reach 36 1/2-37 weeks and they will take me off and just let me contract. So that’s the story for now… stay tuned.

Prayers are much needed and greatly apprecaited at this time. Remmy is still perfect as can be and we couldn’t ask for a more healthy baby. Mommy on the other hand needs to learn how to take an easy so I can last the next four weeks bored out of my mind in bed : )

32-weeksBy week 32, your baby weighs nearly 4 pounds! The crown-to-rump length of your baby is approximately 11.7 inches and the total length is about 18.9 inches. Your uterus is now 5 inches above your bellybutton. Some doctors do not see their patients every other week until now. So, if you were going to the doctor monthly, you may begin going once every other week now. Now that your baby has grown so long and your uterus is higher, you might notice a new discomfort. Your baby is probably head-down and may occasionally stretch out and kick you in the ribs. The pressure on your rib cage can make you sore, especially if one of your baby’s feet becomes caught. You can prevent this by sitting up straight as much as possible. Because your baby’s demands for vitamins and minerals are higher than ever right now, you should continue to take your parental vitamins for the entire pregnancy.

This week your baby’s movements will peak. You should continue to monitor the fetal movements daily and address any concerns with your caregiver. The wrinkles in your baby’s face are disappearing and fat is still being deposited throughout the baby’s body.

The body growth slows down from now on.

Because of the lack of space in the uterus, the legs are drawn up in what is known as the fetal position.

week31

The baby is growing very rapidly and has reached 15 inches in length and weighs around 3 ½ to 4 pounds which is more than half of the size at birth. The baby continues developing a layer of fat under the skin and in the coming weeks the baby will put on a lot of weight. This week there is an incredible development in the baby’s lungs as they will be able to inflate properly from now onwards. The lungs start producing surfactant from this week preventing the baby’s lungs from collapsing as the baby starts breathing smoothly after delivery. The fetal ear is completely developed from the inside as well as outside and the baby can hear your voice as well as other familiar voices before she/he is born. The baby’s skin is pink in color instead of red at this point. The baby has well developed finger nails and might scratch itself in the womb. The baby’s bones are growing stronger and will require calcium to grow well. The baby is receiving all the nutrients through the placenta and the placental blood flow enables the baby to make urine. The baby urinates about half a liter of urine every day and the baby also swallows some of the amniotic fluid which is replaced a few times daily.

29-weeksHaving a baby prematurely is frightening, no doubt. But here’s a reason to relax: Due to the impressive advancements of medical technology, if your baby is born this week, he’d have a 9 out of 10 chance of survival, which is seriously great news. Other awesome developments:

Baby’s brain can now control his breathing and body temperature. He can also cough, and his sucking abilities have been perfected. Look out, boobs!

Your Mini’s skin is looking less wrinkled as he packs on the pounds. He’s starting to look more like a Pampers model and less like a Depends model. He’s now beefing up on the energizing and insulating white fat he’ll be born with (unfortunately, white fat is not energizing and insulating for adults!).

And speaking of energy, your little Energizer Bunny is on fire these days. You’re sure to feel your share of kicks, punches and elbows, especially when you’re lying down. You might want to start keeping a kick chart to monitor your baby’s movements, and also to later show your 13-year-old child what you endured for him. Ask your doctor how to count kicks and how often you should do it.

This week your baby is a little over 15 inches long—about the length of a loaf of bread—and weighs about 3 pounds, as much as a Macbook Air laptop.

28 Week Belly Shot

Today is the coolest day ever! I only have 12 weeks to go… Can you believe it? Remmy is so ready to join our little world it’s amazing. I finally had my first baby boy dream last night where I was able to feed and play with him. He was so cute and I was soooo happy that he was finally here. Thursday, I went to the midwife and she said everything looked fine and I start my “classes” next week. I am now far enough along that I have to go back to the midwife every two weeks, isn’t that exciting? Check out his galloping little heartbeat below. By the way if you’re wondering why it sounds like a horse running it’s because he is soooo big now that you are actually hearing all the valves in his heart.

On Friday, Marshall and I went to get our final 3D/4D Ultrasound and we got to see our little baby’s face, foot, hands and more. He was in the breech position with his legs crossed with his hands over his face and bent totally in half so you can see his feet next to his head. Check out the pictures below.
